Community members welcome!

(Current Activities continued)

Host a scholarship night at local schools and have people on hand to help students and parents understand and demystify scholarships.  Have professional development for teachers also available from November to January.

Barriers in Eastern Idaho—

  • Teachers are over burdened and their curriculum is strictly controlled in accordance with testing that is required
  • What are the missions of the private schools?
  • Not much, if any, PTA/PTO participation.
  • Teacher associations

The Center for New Direction in both EITC and ISU have a Women in Work conference introducing female students to non-traditional female occupations. This would be a good thing for the group to participate in.

Current Working Group Activities

E-Girls—a three day camp to encourage and engage girls in electronics.

Benefits include high media impact—most local papers and televisions will want to cover the event.

Community coalition—a way to engage students, employers, business in the community.

Web site—

  • Can have a newsletter published to the site
  • Available to all media outlets
  • News releases can be published here
  • Have a listserv of interested people
  • Can hand out information in schools
  • Needs to have a way to do networking for committee members
  • Have a survey to find out what is going on in the community
  • Scholarships that are available to this region only, and from local entities

Need to identify local resources and existing programs in order to replicate what is working and how it is working and who is doing it.

Opportunities for after school programs. It is difficult to do because teachers are already pressed for time. It would help to get evidence (I-SATS online and ask P4P Researchers for help) to show teachers and administrators how these can be linked with what they are doing in school. Also show them how they relate to state testing that is required.

Work with students to help them access scholarships that are out there. School counselors are not as much help as perceived.  Provide matrix to help understand what is available.

Let us know if there are any events or updates you would like to share with fellow members.
